A Film to Celebrate Juneteenth in South Bend
Tonight at 9:00 PM, A Juneteenth Celebration will premiere on WNIT Public Television.
The film is presented by Dr. Marvin Curtis and the South Bend Symphony Orchestra and produced in collaboration with Chuck Fry, Ryan Blaske, and me.
The hour-long celebration was filmed at Debartolo Performing Arts Center, featuring music from four composers of African descent, interviews with Gladys Muhammad and Latorya Greene, performances by Emorja Roberson and Pam Blair, and scenes from South Bend.
It is the first time the company is performing to celebrate Juneteenth, which marks the emancipation of enslaved Africans in Galveston, Texas, in 1865.
