Permit Pending: South Bend Burger Society № 2
It’s 6:00PM on Saturday, November 16th and a crowd in search of burgers and beer has gathered inside a former dry-cleaning facility on the South East edge of downtown South Bend. It’s Permit Pending № 2.
Permit Pending is a new project attempting to present under-utilized spaces as proving grounds for new projects focused on art, business, food, and gathering. This evening was the second event with South Bend Burger Society, a new venture from Kevin Lawler of Baker & Rose which plans to host weekly gatherings inside the former Dainty Maid Bake Shop to enjoy locally-sourced burgers and beer.
We gathered inside a vacant section of Vested Interest, the former Ziker dry-cleaning facility being repurposed as a home for small businesses and artists alike. In a matter of eight hours the empty space had become a pseudo-restaurant and bar using materials found throughout the building.
This is what I saw.
