Permit Pending: Hibberd for the Holidays
It’s 8:00PM on Friday, December 13th and a crowd in search of baked goods, cold Stroh’s, and friendship has gathered inside an empty retail space on Main Street in downtown South Bend. It’s Permit Pending № 3.
Permit Pending is a new project attempting to present under-utilized spaces as proving grounds for new projects focused on art, business, food, and gathering. This evening was the third such event and featured The Ragamuffin, Abigail Gillan's "mostly wholesome bakery" that is opening a permanent bakery and cafe early 2020.
We gathered inside an empty space slated to be a restaurant on the first floor of The Hibberd, a historic printing plant finding new life as a mixed use apartment and retail space in downtown South Bend. The empty space had been lightly transformed into a cozy environment fit for a refined holiday bar.
This is what I saw.
