What is (Y)ART?

This past Sunday, August 25th, some hundreds gathered in the backyard of an East side home for (Y)ART?, a feast of South Bend’s artistic talent conceived and organized by Lauren Steinhofer. Paintings lined makeshift fences, children performed cartwheels through a garden, and musicians played between a shipwreck scene and model television set.

For some, the city became an entirely new place in this backyard. And for others, this was an exposé of talent that has long existed in South Bend but too often lies hidden in garages and hole-in-the-wall studios.

So at six-thirty, equipped with two rolls of film, a Pentax K1000, and incoming “what is yart?” texts, I joined the gathering. This is what I saw.
